Episode 68: In the Long Run

May 3, 2026

The final spot for BEST OF THE SUPER Jr. 33 has been awarded to Daiki Nagai.

Following DOUKI’s withdrawal—or should I say, boycott?—it suddenly came down to this.

I happen to be traveling with the tour right now for the title match in Fukuoka and for a general site inspection, so I suppose I was able to be useful in an unexpected way. Nagai volunteered, and he was elected on the spot!

Years ago, I once shouted into the mic, "With stuff like this, momentum is everything!" to force a tag team pairing (with Goto-san). Having done that myself, I’m in no position to stop him—or rather, I don't want anyone digging up my own past! (Laughs).

Now, while the junior entry is set, simply participating is obviously not the end goal. The wrestlers already in the lineup will surely talk about how they plan to win at the upcoming press conferences. So, I gave Nagai a pep talk: "If you come from behind and take them all out now, you'll look incredibly cool!"

I had a singles match with him in 2025, and he’s become even more "brazen" since then (and I mean that as a compliment).

Having this kind of personal connection makes me feel strangely invested in him for this Junior series. I really find myself wanting to root for Nagai.

Of course, I want Wato-kun to do his best since we go way back, and Fujita is just plain cool (I’m a fan).

This "mechanism" is vital. We run around doing promotions to fire up pro-wrestling, forming bonds with the people we meet, who then support us. It always comes down to: "How do you connect with the wrestlers?" That connection leads to expectations and support.

That part is universal. I really want Nagai to give it his all.

Maybe I should increase the number of events where wrestlers can interact with fans... (just thinking out loud).

Anyway, Nagai is a real "tricky customer"—he’s been calling me "President" since way before I actually retired! (Laughs).

Give it your best, Nagai! I’ll be watching you... in the Nagai (long) run.
