Episode 56: The Samurai of Conviction

April 10, 2026

When I read post-match comments or interview articles, I often notice something that bothers me. It’s the frequent use of phrases like "I think I’d like to do my best" or "I think I want to win."

Using the expression "I want to—" or "I think I'd like to—" seems polite and convenient on the surface. But if you're going to do your best, just say "I will do my best!" If you want to win, say "I will win!" That’s much better, isn't it?

This convenient "I want to—" phrasing is actually a magic spell that turns your own will into someone else's business. Saying "I want to" is merely stating a current desire. Unconsciously, it prepares an escape route—an excuse in case you fail.

On the other hand, making a definitive statement like "I will do it" or "I will win" shows the resolve to burn your bridges and shoulder the responsibility for the result.

I realized this during my active career. That’s why, in my later years, I made sure to always speak with conviction. Yes! If your words change, your mindset changes. If your mindset changes, the "thermal energy" (intensity) of your actions changes. And above all, the words of someone who speaks with conviction possess a "strength" that moves people and wins their trust.

Of course, it takes courage to speak with such certainty. But that is exactly what it means to have professional resolve. Are you ready?! (Sorry, it just slipped out).
